In the town center of Corfu you will find some of Corfu’s most beautiful historic palaces and mansions, including St. Michael and George Palace. Built in the neoclassical style, this palace was considered to be the largest building of that era, between 1815 and 1864, just before the reunification of Ionian Islands and Greece. The palace was constructed to serve as the residence of British Lord High Commissioner, Thomas Maitland, but nowadays it houses the one-of-a-kind Museum of Asian Art in Greece. Despite the fact that there were damages to the building during World War II, there have been some renovation projects and today the museum boasts great displays and collections, contributing to the development of history and culture on the island.
