Built in 1890, for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissy, Achilleion palace is home to one of the most visited museums on the island of Corfu. Sissy admired Greece’s culture, history and language and by spending her holidays there was a way to demonstrate her great admiration for those aspects of Greece and Greek people. The palace was renovated in 1994 and is located about ten kilometers away from the town of Corfu, to the south of the island. The well-landscaped gardens of Achilleion palace afford superb views to the town of Corfu as well as the coastline to the south. The features of architecture and decoration focus on Achilles, the hero of Greek mythology and therefore the palace bears this hero’s name.
